CPY 7005: Personhood: Psychotherapeutic Process (4)
Offerings
This course will review the process of psychotherapy in light of Christian theology. Following a discussion of the integration of psychology and theology, a social theological framework for the understanding of therapeutic healing as radically Christocentric will be taught. Psychological treatment will be conceptualized within the context of Biblical and psychological truth, while the content of treatment will be located within the person of Christ and his redemptive work. The therapeutic process will be conceptualized as following the example of Christ who had a life, death, burial, and resurrection.

CPY 7006: Personhood: Psychological Disorder (4)
Offerings
This course will consider contemporary Christian conceptions of psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Psychological research describing religious attitudes about mental illness from communities around the world will be reviewed. A theological framework relevant for the understanding of psychological distress will also be presented. Emphasis will be placed upon the understanding of suffering in the Scriptures, its potential relation to the experience of mental disorder, and its depiction in the character of the suffering savior.

This course will present the study of the human person from both Christian and psychological perspectives. Students will consider Biblical and theological texts about the nature of persons, as the imago Dei, and as biological, psychological, and social creatures. The fallenness of humanity will also be reviewed. Psychological theory and research related to the biopsychosocial aspect of the human person will be covered, as well as psychological issues such as guilt, shame, self-deception, and forgiveness.

This course will offer the graduate student an overview of the philosophical issues and the practical opportunities involved in the attempt to integrate psychological science and theology. Modernist and postmodernist assumptions will be reviewed briefly, as well as the challenges of, for example, determinism and reductionism, as they relate in particular to the discipline of clinical psychology. Faculty from both the disciplines of psychology and theology will conduct presentations for the students on issues of integration relevant to their own academic and clinical work.

CPY 7009: Group Psychotherapy and Community Processes (4)

Presents strategies for students wishing to integrate religious and spiritual techniques into the practice of group psychotherapy. Group psychotherapy provides a particularly rich therapeutic venue for exploring the theological position of healing as reconciliation to self, others, and God through incarnation manifest in the form of kenotic community. The course is designed to provide students with a firm foundation in the theory and practice of group psychotherapy and a theological grounding in social theology. The course will seek to offer students a way to integrate the latest biopsychosocial and spiritual research with psychotherapeutic goals and techniques. Through lecture, discussion, reading and writing assignments, and group participation students will be exposed to the fundamentals of how groups are defined, formed, maintained, and concluded.

CPY 7010: Psychometrics/Theory of Test Construction (5)

Topics include classical testing theory, survey development/test design, norming, reliability, and validity, using tools such as item analysis, confirmatory, and exploratory factor analysis. Applies psychometric theory to the creation and evaluation of psychological instruments. Introduces students to descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, probability, statistical vs. clinical significance, effect size, and power. Overviews analytical strategies including tests of mean differences, analysis of variance, correlation, linear prediction and non-parametric statistics, emphasizing both conceptual understanding and application in SPSS computer software. Highlights consideration of research questions and assumptions of tests in order to appropriately analyze and interpret data.

Focuses on research pertaining to evidence-based clinical practice and case study design in light of the local clinical scientist model. Statistical training focuses on analysis of variance techniques including factorial ANOVA, planned comparisions, post-hoc analysis and repeated measures. In small teams, students write and propose the introduction and method sections of the second year research project. CPY 7032: Research Methods and Statistics II (5)

Prerequisite: CPY 7031. In this class, various regression techniques are explored from both conceptual and statistical vantage points. Procedures include: moderated multiple regression, non-linear regression, logistic regression, causal modeling and mediation, moderated mediation, and multiple imputation for missing data. Accompanying the learning of each technique, there is an emphasis on proper application in both clinical and industrial/organizational psychology contexts.

This course provides an overview of psychotropic medications and mainline psychiatric approaches to the understanding and treatment of emotional and behavioral problems. Emphasis will be given to the scientific evidence for (as well as against) the use of these medications for people with common psychiatric or psychological sequelae including mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Discussion of clinical applications will emphasize the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration as well as broader biopsychosocial models for understanding the effects and limitations of psychotropic medications.

Recent healthcare reform and current medical service provision trends require psychologists to develop a comfort level in fast-paced primary care environments. Focus will be on the theoretical and practical considerations of the integrated behavioral healthcare model in the context of other emerging trends in healthcare such as the patient-centered medical home. This class will specifically explore and reference the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model and its applicability to clinical practice across other medical settings.
